The sustainability office at the American Eagle Outfitters headquarters noticed that its employees would often use disposable containers in the lunchroom even though reusable dishware was provided. This behavior wasted thousands of dollars on paper and plastic food containers. We also noticed improper recycling and food waste disposal methods. As project leader, myself and my team prepared a research report for managerial staff using Community Based Social Marketing principles that used observation, interviews and surveys to gain employee perspective on the issue. A pilot project was proposed for the company's use that offered hard and soft solutions, from reusable dishware placement and cafeteria layout to using the brand's environmental values to encourage employees to "Live Your Life, Stash Your Trash."
