JFLI is located on the Southwest side of the island of St. John, one of the three islands that create the United States Virgin Islands. The Learning Institute, established in the eighties by local residents, serves as a summer camp for local children. In the summer of 2013, I planned and executed a series of art + science + sustainability lessons on site for 25 children, ages 3-13.
Ocean plastic and its effect on island ecosystems
Ocean currents and gyres
Beginning art principles
Lessons were always in the form of either an art activity or adventure, and was offered at different levels for the range of ages. Older children were encouraged to help younger participants in activites, acting as guides.
